Learning outcomes

The programme builds on the specific and generic outcomes of degree programmes in a wide range of specialisms. Benchmark statements in Medicine, Biosciences, Physics, Engineering and Health Studies all apply. The relevant skills are therefore generic problem solving and analytical competencies which are common to all the above undergraduate programmes.

By the end of this programme students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the physical and mathematical aspects of image formation of more than one techniques;
- Identify the anatomical and physiological properties of tissue associated with image formation and contrast for more than one technique;;
- Analyse and compare the technical performance of various modalities and understand the health and safety considerations;
- Demonstrate an in-depth and advanced understanding of the clinical applications of each technique, the variables involved and how they can be compared;
- Apply IT in literature searching, analysis and display of data, and report writing to enhance life-long learning in medical imaging;
- Demonstrate enhancement of their professional skills in communication, problem-solving, learning effectively and quickly, and effective self-management.

Transferable (key) skills

The programme develops key skills identified in the above learning outcomes, specifically:
- specific area related knowledge ,understanding and critical thinking
- problem solving skills
- investigative skills
- analytical skills.

The Programme gives the student the opportunity to achieve the following capabilities as applied to Medical Imaging:
- independant and directed learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development
- critical engagement in the development of professional /disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement for the Postgraduate Certificate (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area via an unseen written exam;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion via written essays and presentations;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data via written essays and presentations.
