Learning outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of core academic skills including research, critical analysis and good academic practice.
Identify and apply laws, regulations and ethical codes relevant to journalists.
Analyse news output broadcast by media organisations in terms of form, content, codes and conventions.
Comprehend and engage with scholarly debate concerning news and journalism.
Display developing skills in the research and production of a range of broadcast journalism products.
Demonstrate an ability to communicate ideas effectively in written, verbal and visual form.
Demonstrate proficiency in using a range of electronic recording and editing equipment.
Describe key governmental and party political structures within the UK.
Discuss media and communication in a historical context.

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
Qualities and transferable skills necessary for related employment – the ability to write in concise and accurate English; to analyse material and exercise judgement; to conduct simple research by telephone and internet; to communicate effectively.
Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility – organisational skills; delivery to a deadline; punctuality; teamwork.

Assessment

Demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline as outlined above.
Work that covers a restricted area of the discipline – research techniques, single camera operation and basic journalism.
Demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies – concise and accurate written and spoken English; basic news judgement and the awareness of the legal constraints; basic camera and editing skills, basic audio recording and editing and basic online writing skills.
