Year 3

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- an ability to communicate confidently and proficiently with native or other competent speakers of Portuguese across the range of aspects of everyday life, work and/or study in a foreign culture
- acquire academic and practical knowledge of contemporary Portugal or Brazil.
- develop personal independence, self-confidence, and the social and interpersonal skills required by group life.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to develop and practise:

- oral, written and practical skills in the target language;
- the organisation of life and study in Portugal or Brazil;
- inter-personal skills required to operate in Portuguese-speaking society
- the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- skills necessary for the communication of information;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed (on a Pass/Fail basis) by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes specified for the residence abroad and will include:

- successful completion of the requisite number of credits at the student's host university or receipt of the satisfactory feedback to student performance from the foreign educational institution or employer
- successful completion of a 1000-word written assignment in Portuguese in March/April
