Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- conduct more advanced theory and data based investigations into economic problems in at least one country
- have further advanced their capability to identify, collect, appraise and apply country-level data and information to resolve economic problems
- have further advanced their capability to engage critically with current theoretical and empirical literature in a at least one field of economics to analyse issues in either a local or the global economy and their relevance for policy design or the management of commercial, public or not-for-profit organisations
- have further advanced their capability to demonstrate the analytical, critical thinking and intellectual skills required to solve national or international economic problems
- have further advanced their capability to define, design, execute and present a significant and extended piece of independent research on an economic topic
- demonstrate even more effective interpersonal skills and will have further advanced the ability to function sensitively and productively when working in cross-cultural teams
- have further advanced their capability to critically evaluate the potential of economic activities to deliver positive and negative social and environmental outcomes
- have further advanced their capability to produce professional-quality economic reports and documents
- have further advanced their capability to deliver professional-quality presentations on economic issues using appropriate visual aids and technical support

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences; and
- the skills necessary to support future independent learning.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability top apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within the discipline; and
- work that is typically both evaluative and analytical.
