BSc Economics and Finance

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate familiarity with the core concepts of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and apply them to basic problems in the analysis of economic systems and economic policy
- demonstrate competence in introductory mathematics and statistics relevant to the study of economics and finance
- understand how financial statements are produced and how to interpret financial information produced for publication and for planning, decision-making and control within the organisation;
- understand and apply the principles of costing, the concepts of decision-making and management accounting techniques for the purpose of control;
- demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of corporate finance, the time value of money, interest rates discount factors and to value bonds and equities
- use research skills including literature searches and the collection and presentation of data to investigate economics questions and report results in appropriate written form
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners and have strategies and techniques for managing own learning

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- basic research skills in the analysis of economic problems
- essay writing skills, including essay structure, citation, bibliography and presentation of equations and empirical evidence
- quantitative skills appropriate to the study of economics and finance including mathematical and statistical analysis
- basic IT and including use word processing, spreadsheet and database programmes and network resources.
- personal development planning skills, including self-auditing and self-reflection, decision-making and action planning

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to economics and finance through written examination
- mathematical and statistical knowledge through written examination
- research and essay writing skill through assessed essays
