Learning outcomes

The programme will:
- enable students to work across more than one discipline by providing the flexibility to study three disciplines at level one;
- allow the study of two disciplines to the same depth as any single honours student but with less breadth in each discipline;
- provide a basis for further advanced study in either of the disciplines or in a cognate interdisciplinary area.

General
- The distinctiveness, appeal and strength of University of Leeds joint honours programmes lie in the unusual combination of depth, breadth and flexibility which they offer, as well as in the exceptional range of degree combinations available.
- They permit students to study two disciplines, in depth and to degree level while acquiring a broader range of skills than is typically possible within a single honours degree.
- They are emphatically joint honours programmes, rather than integrated programmes: students can therefore make the links they choose from the wide choice of optional modules available within each discipline. Within certain parameters, they thus effectively make connections and devise pathways according to their own preferences, rather than being faced with a prescribed combination of modules chosen for them by others.
- The students must acquire the flexibility of mind and variety of learning techniques needed to switch between the two disciplines.
- A further element of distinctiveness is the flexibility of the programme structure, which allows joint honours students to change direction more easily, and more radically, than single honours students.
- Many of these programmes also allow the opportunity to undertake a work placement, field work or study abroad.

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the discipline;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities i.e.
- - be able to communicate the results of their work
- - present a structured and coherent simple argument
- - be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the discipline
- evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries.

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the discipline;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities i.e.
- - be able to communicate the results of their work;
- - present a structured and coherent simple argument
- - be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the discipline
- - evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data
- demonstrate an appreciation of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an understanding of and an ability to apply appropriate mathematical and statistical concepts to the analysis of business related problems;
- use word-processing, spreadsheet and database programs and network resources; and
- understand and apply basic concepts and models in micro and macro economics.

Transferable (key) skills

The programme provides opportunities for students to practise and develop:
- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- analytical and critical thinking;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake further training of a professional or equivalent nature where appropriate.

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills appropriate for employment related to the subject areas studied; and
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.

Assessment

The achievement of the programme outcomes will be assessed by a variety of assessment methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the disciplines;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material associated with the disciplines;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- work that is both evaluative and creative.

The learning context for this year/award will be predictable, providing a familiarisation with the discipline

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline; and
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
