BA Asia Pacific Studies and Japanese

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year, students should:
- be familiar with with standard Japanese pronunciation and with both Japanese syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and approximately 250 Japanese kanji;
- be able to understand and reproduce the essential features of Japanese grammar;
- be able to read short texts in Japanese;
- be able to translate sentences and short texts from Japanese into English and vice versa;
- be able to type East Asian characters on a computer and master basic related IT skills;
- be able to respond to aural comprehension questions in Japanese;
- be able to conduct simple dialogues in Japanese;
- demonstrate a sound basic familiarity with Asia Pacific history, politics, economy, culture, society, geography and development, particularly as relevant to Japan;
- demonstrate a sound familiarity with the basic concepts and information, and the practical, technical and intellectual approaches in at least two academic disciplines;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with these disciplines;
- be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the disciplines;
- be able to present structured and coherent arguments;
- be able to communicate the results of their work;
- be able to engage in meaningful discussion with peers and tutors within a virtual learning environment;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners.

Transferable (key) skills

- understand and demonstrate coherant and detailed subject knowledge and profesional competencies, some of which will be informed by reseach/scholarship in discipline;
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the disciplines;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspect of recent research and /or scholarship.
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the disciplines;
- make appropriate use of scholary reviews and primary sources;
- apply their knowledge and understanding by initiating and carrying out an extended piece of work or project;
- conform to profesional boundaries and norms where application.

Assessment

- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;

- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situation;
