Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed knowledge of the history, economy, culture, and politics of the Asia Pacific region;
- deploy accurately techniques of analysis and enquiry such as working with scholarly reviews and primary sources written in English;
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding of events and developments in the Asia Pacific region, which enables the development and sustaining of an argument both in writing and orally;
- describe and comment on recent research on the history, economy, culture, and politics of the Asia Pacific region;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of their knowledge;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended written research project (dissertation) on a topic related to the Asia Pacific region.

For students completing the international variant of the programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to live and study independently in an English-speaking context in the Asia Pacific region;
- enhanced their future employability by reflecting on the utility of skills that they acquired while living abroad.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability top apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within the discipline;
- work that is typically both evaluative and creative.
