Learning outcomes

By the end of Y2 students should be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of key areas of Theology, Biblical Studies and Religious Studies with variations depending on module choice. All students study the core module ‘Studying Religion in Context’ which supports students in their programme-level learning and skills development, and provides a basis for greater independent study in TRS at level 3. Building on knowledge and skills acquired in Y1, they will have progressed in their understanding of theological, ethical, philosophical and sociological thought about religion (with some variation subject to module choice). Students will also have had the opportunity to develop more advanced knowledge of a range of topics in TRS, including science and religion, women and religion and further study of world religions.

Transferable (key) skills

The programme provides opportunities for students to practise and develop:
- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- analytical and critical thinking;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake further training of a professional or equivalent nature where appropriate.

Students will have had the opportunity to practise as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- decision making.

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in a plural society;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility in a range of professional and personal situations;
- decision making;
- evaluation of different sorts of evidence and construction of argument.

Assessment

The achievement of the programme outcomes will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for each subject and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the disciplines;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material associated with the disciplines;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- work that is both evaluative and analytical.

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline/profession to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion.

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline in a range of instances;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- the ability to read and use texts both critically and empathetically, while addressing such questions as genre, content, context, perspective, purpose, original and potential meaning, and the effect of translation if the text is not read in the original language.
