BA Chinese and Theatre and Performance

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- Use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities (e.g. communicate the results of their work, present a structured and coherent simple argument in both written and spoken form and evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data);
- Appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners through the use of a range of personal planning techniques; reflect on their progress and make appropriate adjustments to their working practices;
- Engage in meaningful discussion with peers and tutors within a virtual learning environment;
- Communicate in Chinese at a survival level;
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of the target language and its writing systems;
- Demonstrate simple receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;
- Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of one or more aspects of the literatures, cultures, linguistic contexts, history, politics and social structures of Chinese speaking societies;
- Use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities in theatre and performance, being able to:
- communicate creative and theoretical work to a range of audiences using different modes of delivery; access, select and
interpret basic theatre and performance research;
- critique and evaluate live performance;
- Evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving in theatre and performance practice, theory and research; understand processes by which performance is created, realised and managed; contribute to the group processes involved in the creation of original work;
- Demonstrate an appreciation of different approaches to problem solving associated with the two disciplines;
- Being familiar with the concept of academic integrity, and having the ability to acknowledge sources in accordance with
University of Leeds guidelines.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- The transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied, especially in relation to team working and independent working skills using both English and Chinese;
- The exercise of social and cultural sensitivity;
- Analytical and critical thinking;
- The deployment of decision-making skills in complex and unpredictable situations;
- Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme;
- Basic general skills of planning, organising, self-management and self-motivation;
- The ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- The ability to respond imaginatively and flexibly to a creative brief; to access and utilise appropriate information; to problem solve; to communicate effectively in a variety of forms and to various audiences; to work independently and in groups; to collaborate effectively in pursuing goals with others;
- Awareness of health and safety procedures; use of knowledge and awareness of ethics.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- Demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to Chinese and Threatre/Performance in essays, examinations and practical work;
- Work that draws on a wide variety of material associated with the disciplines;
- The ability to evaluate received opinion;
- Assessed presentations (alone and/or in groups);
- Work that is both evaluative and creative;
- Demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies in formal module assessments.
