Learning outcomes

- Engage critically with key developments, traditions, theories, and debates in media and communication study
- Demonstrate developing expertise in two or more areas of media and communication study and/or media production.
- Demonstrate developing independence in research including the ability to devise and execute small research projects, select appropriate research methodologies and resources, critique research findings and adhere to the principles of research ethics
• Students will demonstrate understanding of the contexts and processes by which professional media is produced. Students can apply this knowledge to make informed contributions to debates about media texts and industries and to make policy recommendations
- Students demonstrate an awareness of the media as shaping and shaped by society. They are able to draw connections between media and culture and discuss the different roles that media can play in different societies
- Students demonstrate advanced media literacy, particularly the ability to analyse a range of media texts drawing on their knowledge of media forms and genres, institutions and theory. Students are able to discuss the meanings of media texts and reflect on their social, political and cultural significance.
- Students can work independently and as a member of a team and can present their ideas in a range of styles for different audiences.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- decision making;

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline/profession to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
