Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- engage in everyday conversation, write basic sentences and read simple texts in Japanese;
- acquire academic and practical knowledge of contemporary Japan;
- develop personal independence, self-confidence, and the social and interpersonal skills required by group life.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- Oral, written and practical skills in Japanese;
- The organisation of life and study in Japan;
- Inter-personal skills required to operate in Japanese society
- The ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- Skills necessary for the communication of information;
- Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed (on a Pass/Fail basis) by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes
specified for the residence abroad and will include:
- Continuous assessment in language and disciplinary modules by the host institution in Japan;
- Assessment of a research report undertaken during the course of the year abroad in Japan;
- Submission of a satisfactory log-book kept during the course of the year abroad.
