Learning outcomes

Overall, on completion of their year abroad students should be able to demonstrate:
- an ability to communicate confidently and proficiently with native or other competent speakers of French across the sometimes unpredictable and complex range of aspects of everyday life, work and/or study in a foreign culture
- first-hand knowledge and appreciation of the target culture
- enhanced cultural self-awareness.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to develop and practise:
- interpersonal and transferable skills required to operate successfully in a French-speaking society, in a variety of roles and situations
- resourcefulness and self-reliance.

Assessment

The achievement of the programme outcomes will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for each subject and will include:
- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the disciplines;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material associated with the disciplines;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- work that is both evaluative and analytical.

Achievement will be assessed (on a Pass/Fail basis) by:
- submission of a year-abroad logbook;
- satisfactory feedback as to student performance from the foreign educational institution or employer;
- successful completion of any academic work set for the student while overseas.
