BA Film Studies and Thai Studies

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

-demonstrate awareness of the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of Thai and Film Studies;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities i.e.
present a structured and coherent simple argument
have some knowledge of critical terminology;
- have experience of national cinemas from a range of periods and places;
- have an awareness of the importance of the cultural and socio-historical contexts in which film is produced and consumed;
- develop critical skills;
- develop analytical skills;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- Read and write all Thai consonants, vowels and diphthongs;
- Understand the system for identifying intonation;
- Pronounce Thai clearly and accurately;
- Communicate effectively, orally and in written form, using at least 1,000 Thai words;
- Read and write short sentences in Thai;
- Demonstrate a sound understanding of Thai grammar and syntax;
- Demonstrate basic receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts.
- Demonstrate a sound basic familiarity with Thai history, culture, society, geography and development;

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to Thai and Film Studies, e.g. be able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources, be able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and independent learning, including the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to Thai and Film Studies;
- demonstrating the ability to construct an argument;
- demonstrating some knowledge of two disciplines.
- work that covers a restricted area of the disciplines;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies;
- Regular written, oral and aural tests during the course of the year to ascertain students' level of progress with: the Thai script; the Thai intonation system; Thai reading and writing ability; Thai vocabulary development and use; Thai grammar and syntax; the Thai context;
- Continuous assessment and end-of-semester examinations and essays in both Thai language and in students' disciplinary modules.
