Learning outcomes
GeographyOn completion of the programme students should have provided evidence of having: - an understanding of human social, economic, political and cultural systems from a spatial and/or environmental perspective; - an understanding of geography's intellectual development and important theoretical perspectives applied in the study of space, place and the environment; - an appreciation of the practical contributions made by geographers to debates and policy on societal and environmental issues, and an understanding of their potential for continuing such contributions; - the critical skills necessary to engage with ideas in the social sciences and humanities; - skills in the use of geographical information systems, and/or the application of qualitative and quantitative analysis to geographical study; - skills in teamwork, investigation, presentation and communication.ManagementOn completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to: - understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the discipline; - deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the discipline; - demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument; - describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship; - appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the discipline; - apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out a piece of work; - collect and analyse data derived from a range of sources, making use of scholarly reviews and primary sources; - show a capacity for critical thinking and an ability to evaluate the value and relevance of data within the framework provided by available theory and practice; - demonstrate understanding of business policy, and strategic management concepts, research and theories; - understand the nature and role of the operations function within organisations and the principles underpinning effective planning and control of operations; - demonstrate understanding of employment law or of the changing context and process of personnel management, selection, training and development within contemporary work organisations; - appreciate the wide context in which business and management operate; - demonstrate relevant knowledge of technical procedures and systems which enable organisations to function; - understand how organisations are managed and how people react and respond within an organisational context; - demonstrate knowledge of the external environment in which the organisation operates; and - appreciate the inter-relationships among and the integration between these areas.

GeographyStudents will have had the opportunity to acquire: - the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to human geography; - the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; - the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations; - the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences; - the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature.ManagementStudents will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme: - the key transferable skills appropriate for managers; - the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility; - information synthesis skills; - the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations; - the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences; - the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature; and - lifelong learning skills such as time-management, group working, communication, planning and leadership.
Assessment
GeographyAchievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include: - demonstrating the ability top apply a broad range of aspects of human geography; - work that draws on a wide variety of material; - the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion; - evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within human geography; - work that is typically both evaluative and creative.ManagementAchievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include: - demonstrating the ability to apply a core range of aspects of the discipline; - work that draws on a variety of material; - the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion; - evidence of an ability to conduct an in-depth enquiry within the discipline; and - work that is typically both evaluative and analytical.
