Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features in a range of aspects of the discipline;
- demonstrate intermediate knowledge of both core linguistics and linguistics within wider contexts;
- start gaining specialised knowledge in one or two chosen sub-disciplines of linguistics;
- describe the central components of a given model of analysis in a given area of the discipline;
- show an awareness of the fact that there are different ways to analyse given datasets, and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of these different approaches;
- be able to carry out valid data analysis (with guidance);
- understand quantitative and qualitative analyses reported in the academic literature and start evaluating them critically;
- appreciate that data can be subject to bias, and are not necessarily representative;
- present a structured discussion using information from different sources, using appropriate acknowledgements and lists of sources; - show some autonomy within a structured work environment;
- be aware that current linguistic models are not exhaustive, and are open to debate;
- identify and implement ways in which to enhance their learning skills within the discipline.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable skills necessary to non-vocational employment, or to further academic study and/or professional qualifications;
- the importance of personal responsibility to personal and academic development;
- the ability to make decisions within a known environment;
- the communication of certain types of information to a delimited set of audiences;
- a growing ability to read and think critically.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of the discipline, from relatively complex applications in known environments to simple applications in novel environments;
- at the level of description, drawing on a range of perspectives in area of study;
- the recognition that received opinion is open to criticism.
