BA Social Work(with registration)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques that pertain to social work practice including the HCPC Code of Conduct and Ethics for students;
- use basic generic and social work specific intellectual qualities
- be able to communicate the results of their work;
- present a structured and coherent simple argument;
- be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of social work;
- evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with social work;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries in social work

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to social work;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility in social work;

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to social work;
- work that covers particular demands of the social work profession;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies in social work practice;

Assessment procedures
The conduct of assessment will conform to existing general regulations and faculty norms within the University of Leeds, incorporating the rules and regulations of Ordinance IX taught Undergraduate Awards

Criteria for a Pass
Successfully undertake 120 credits of assessment Level 1 to gain the Certificate of Higher Education in Social Studies

Students who exit with the Certificate in Social Studies will not be able to practice as a social worker

A pass mark of 40 or above must be obtained in order to receive module credits

Compensation between the elements within modules is allowable where stated in the module descriptor, otherwise there is no compensation.

Reassessment.

A mark of 40 will be the maximum obtainable upon reassessment

Reassessment will normally be by the same method as the initial assessment and must be taken by a date specified by the Module Assessment Board for the relevant module or by the School Board of Examiners

At the discretion of the School Board of Examiners, students will normally be given an opportunity of a maximum of two attempts to resubmit module assessment at all levels, unless otherwise stated.

Progression

The School Board of Examiners will consider the performance of all students registered to undertake the BA (Hons) Social Work programme at the end of level 1

Normally students will only be allowed to proceed to level 2 of the programme provided they have obtained 90 credits at level 1, which must include the successful completion of the Readiness to practice element of Professional Practice 1.

Students who carry over reassessment of modules will not be allowed to proceed to practice placement, until they have a provisional successful pass mark for the outstanding work

Progression should normally take place before the end of Semester 1 in the following year.
