BA Social Work(with registration)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed social work knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in social work
- deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within social work
- demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
- describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship relevant to social work;
- appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in social work;
- make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
- apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project relevant to social work;
- conform to professional social work boundaries and norms;
- a sound understanding of and critical evaluation of the five core areas of study relevant to social work; social work services; service users and carers; the service delivery context; values and ethics; social work theory and the nature of social work practice.
- apply subject specific and other skills including ICT and numerical and problem solving skills
- apply skills in working with others and in professional development
- successfully achieve the qualifying standard in the Professional Capabilities Framework and the HCPC Standards of Proficiency.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to social work;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility;
- the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations in social work practice;
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences;
- the ability to undertake appropriate further training of a professional or equivalent nature;

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects of social work;
- work that draws on a wide variety of material;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
- evidence of an ability to conduct independent, in depth enquiry within social work;
- work that is typically both evaluative and creative;

In order to achieve the award and be able to apply to the HCPC register as a social worker, students must pass all modules including achieving the College of Social Work Professional Capabilities Framework at qualifying level and the HCPC Standards of Proficiency.
The award of BA (Hons) in Social Work only gives candidates the opportunity to apply for registration with the HCPC, the regulatory body for social work. The award does not confer the status of registered social worker.

Assessment procedures

The conduct of assessment will conform to existing general regulations and faculty norms within the University of Leeds, incorporating the rules and regulations of Ordinance IX taught Undergraduate Awards

Assessment will meet the requirements of the HCPC, the Regulatory Body for Social Work (Standards of Education and Training) and those of the College of Social Work, the professional body for social work, including the 'Professional Capabilities Framework'.

Criteria for a Pass

Successfully undertake 360 credits of assessment of which 120 credits must be obtained at Level 1, 120 credits must be obtained at Level 2 and 120 credits must be obtained at Level 3 to gain the BA (Hons) in Social Work.

A pass mark of 40 or above must be obtained in order to receive module credits

Compensation between the elements within modules is allowable where stated in the module descriptor, otherwise there is no compensation.

Reassessment.

A mark of 40 will be the maximum obtainable upon reassessment

Reassessment will normally be by the same method as the initial assessment and must be taken by a date specified by the Module Assessment Board for the relevant module or by the School Board of Examiners

At the discretion of the school Board of Examiners, students will normally be given an opportunity of a maximum of two attempts to resubmit module assessment at all levels, unless otherwise stated.

Except in exceptional circumstances to be determined by the Exam Board there will only be two attempts allowable for the placement element of the Professional Practice 3 module. This will normally be by way of an extension to the current placement up to a maximum of 30 days

Progression

The School Board of Examiners will consider the performance of all students registered to undertake the BA (Hons) Social Work programme at the end of level 3. All those students obtaining a pass in all 360 credits at levels 1, 2 and 3 will be awarded the BA (Hons) Social Work and will be eligible to apply for registration with the Health Care Professions Council.
