Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should be able to:

- demonstrate in-depth knowledge of particular atmospheric issues
- appreciate the interaction between Earth's atmosphere and other parts of the Earth system
- quantify the effects of human activities on the atmosphere
- use computer programmes and models as a tool for simulating some atmospheric processes
- apply knowledge to understand new or unfamiliar behaviour of the atmosphere.

Transferable (key) skills

On completion of this programme/year students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme, broad competencies in the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied:

- analytical and operational skills, including techniques for gathering analysing and reporting on datasets and appreciate their significance
- computing skills, including writing simple programs in Fortran to sort and analyse data
- numerical skills, including statistical analysis of data sets and the significance of statistical metrics
- field skills, including an ability to plan and execute experiments, collect and analyse the data and prepare reports.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of each module:

- demonstrating basic competency consistent with requirements of the profession
- applying a broad range of skills (numerical, computational, statistical) to well structured or directed problems in a complex situation
- demonstrating work that is both descriptive and analytical in nature
- demonstrating ability to keep accurate and informative log of activities and results
- demonstrating ability to present results in written, graphical and numerical formats, including computer programme output.
