MA History of Health, Medicine and Society(Part-Time)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the development of the history of medicine and the social history of medicine as historical sub-disciplines, and the place of health and medicine within the discipline of history;
- Debate and interrogate key approaches that have shaped the methodology and practice of historians of health, medicine and society;
- Exhibit advanced skills of source analysis in relation to documents, images and objects which relate to the history of health, medicine and society, and display a critical empathy with the historical conditions in which they were produced;
- Communicate the complexity of past cultures whilst showing the ability to define and emphasise key events, texts and ideas within these societies;
- Show a sophisticated awareness of the range of research techniques and resources available to pursue the history of health, medicine and society, including archival opportunities, electronic resources and museum collections;
- Formulate and argue hypotheses relating to questions and controversies in the history of health, medicine and society, and be able to communicate them to peer and academic audiences, through high standards of oral and written presentation;
- Take a proactive, independent and self-reflective role in their research, and to respond dynamically to tutors and peers from their MA cohort.

Transferable (key) skills

Taught Masters students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified
for the programme:
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or employment in a capacity or area of professional practice;
- the knowledge and skills required to plan, execute and communicate advanced research in a professional manner, with
particular ability to conduct independent research in their own broad area of historical specialism.
- advanced skills in the locating, processing, analysing and communicating large bodies of material, for a specific purpose,
in an orderly, efficient and professional manner.
- evaluating their own achievements and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision-making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
- the skills necessary to critically engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms of history.
