Year 4

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- an in-depth understanding of issues, concepts, events and analyses informed by knowledge across or in aspects of Social and Public Policy;
- exhibit mastery in the exercise of generic and specific intellectual abilities relevant to Social and Public Policy;
- demonstrate an understanding of issues, approaches and techniques related to research or advanced scholarship in Social and Public Policy;
- the ability, demonstrated through the production of a dissertation, to proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these, and to critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the field of Social and Public Policy;
the ability, demonstrated through undertaking a project on behalf of a community group or public or community employer, to proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these, and to critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the field of Social and Public Policy.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in areas of professional practice, or to transfer from other fields into those more closely related to Social Policy and allied areas;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex investigatory settings;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within Social and Public Policy;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to areas within Social and Public Policy;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.

Forms of assessment appropriate to this level of study will include, essays and a project report.
