Learning outcomes

On completion of the year, students should:

- be familiar with the basic concepts and terminology associated with petroleum engineering, including reservoir formation, exploration and drilling techniques, reservoir engineering, extraction and refining techniques, product marketing and logistics;
- understand basic engineering concepts such as mass and energy balances, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid flow and reaction kinetics, and appreciate how they relate to petroleum engineering operations;
- be familiar with a range of geological techniques and terminology, including geophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy and mapping;
- be capable of using mathematical techniques to solve simple petroleum engineering problems;
- be able to analyse and evaluate scientific data and communicate their findings in written and verbal form;
- be capable of undertaking a simple group project involving the basic design of a petroleum processing operation;
- be able to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- be aware of professional and petroleum engineering-specific boundaries.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
