Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
• understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in Geological Sciences;
• deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within Geological Sciences;
• demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
• describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
• appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in Geological Sciences;
• make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
• apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project;
• gain practical experience of field mapping and data collection
• gain experience of research through integration into a research group for the duration of the year
• gain experience of making a research presentation to a an expert group

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

• the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the Geological sciences and the degree pathway followed;
• the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility, in the field and the laboratory;
• the deployment of decision making skills in complex and unpredictable situations, for example independent field work;
• the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions both in writing and verbally;
• training in the design and implementation of a research programme involving the collection of new data

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Undergraduate Master's will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
