MSc Mathematical Modelling for Transport(Part-time 36month)

Year 1

(Award available for year: Postgraduate Diploma)

Learning outcomes

- recognise real world transportation issues susceptible to mathematical analysis; identify suitable ways to formulate
them into mathematical problems and develop relevant solution strategies by applying mathematical and statistical
methods.
- apply optimization algorithms to traffic equilibrium models and demonstrate understanding of convergence.
- hand-write code to solve mathematical models and to interrogate and visualise model outputs.
- interrogate and manage large data sets, including using databases.
- use commercial software to study transport problems. Present, interpret and assess the quality of outputs.
- write scientific reports on transport models and modelling approaches suitable for technical and lay audiences.
- work in a multidisciplinary team and effectively execute and communicate the role of mathematical modelling
within an integrated project.
- be familiar with mathematical models used in different contexts of transport analyses.
- undertake and report on a significant piece of relevant original investigation through the dissertation process,
under supervision
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
- formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
- critically and creatively to evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the discipline.
- embark on a programme of research as a research student
- undertake a career as a transport modeller

Transferable (key) skills

- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in industry as a transport
modeller.
- critically evaluate the appropriateness and applicability of mathematical models, and the quality of modelling and
data analyses;
- self-direction and independent learning
- setting targets for project work, under supervision
- the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;

Assessment

Achievement for the Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate will be assessed by a variety of
