Learning outcomes
On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the discipline;- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities;- to communicate the results of their work; present a structured and coherent simple argument;- to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the discipline;- to evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data;- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline;- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries;- demonstrate an understanding of the historical development and basic teachings of the major religions and philosophical traditions of East Asia;- show an understanding of the problems and shortcomings in Western studies of East Asian religions;- demonstrate knowledge of Western constructions of East Asian religions;- demonstrate knowledge of historical development, major doctrines and social practices of Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, Christianity, Confucianism and Daoism in East Asia;- show an understanding of the problems and shortcomings in Western studies of East Asian religions;- demonstrate knowledge of Western constructions of East Asian religions;- communicate in Japanese at a survival level;- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of the target language ;- demonstrate simple receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of one or more aspects of the literatures, cultures, linguistic contexts, history, politics, geography and social structures of Japanese speaking societies;
Transferable (key) skills
Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;- skills to analyze critically a range of visual and literary materials relevant in thy study of East and Southeast Asian religions and philosophies- qualities and transferable skills related to the subject area(s) studied valuable for employment, such as to be able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources in both English and Japanese, be able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning;- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied, especially in relation to team working and independent working skills using both English and Japanese;- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility, and social and cultural sensitivity;
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies;- assessed presentations
