Learning outcomes

On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- an ability to communicate confidently and proficiently with native or other competent speakers of French across the sometimes unpredictable and complex range of aspects of everyday life, work and/or study in a foreign culture
- demonstrate first-hand academic and practical knowledge of contemporary French-speaking culture.
- Demonstrate enhanced cultural self-awareness
- develop personal independence, self-confidence, and the social and interpersonal skills required by group life.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to develop and practise:

- oral, written and practical skills in French;
- the organisation of life and study in a French-speaking country;
- inter-personal skills required to operate in a French-speaking society
- the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- skills necessary for the communication of information;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed (on a Pass/Fail basis) by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes specified for the residence abroad and will include:

- submission of a year-abroad log in French, submitted in November
- successful completion of all courses including the language and studies exams as set by students' host university or satisfactory report from the student's employer
- submission of an essay assignment (in French) in April
