BA Film Studies and Spanish

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

-demonstrate awareness of the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of Spanish and Film Studies;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities i.e.
present a structured and coherent simple argument
have some knowledge of critical terminology;
- have experience of national cinemas from a range of periods and places;
- have an awareness of the importance of the cultural and socio-historical contexts in which film is produced and consumed;
- develop critical skills;
- develop analytical skills.
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of the Spanish language
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the history of the Spanish-speaking world
- function in spoken and written Spanish at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), being able to understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics; interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible and produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and in a variety of contexts.
-demonstrate knowledge and understanding, at an introductory level, of the literature, history and visual cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to Spanish and Film Studies, e.g. be able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources, be able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and independent learning, including the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
-foundational intercultural awareness and skills.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to Spanish and Film Studies;
- demonstrating the ability to construct an argument;
- demonstrating some knowledge of two disciplines.
- work that covers a restricted area of the disciplines;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies;
