Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
demonstrate a broad understanding of the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques within the discipline of theatre and performance;
apply generic and subject specific intellectual qualities in theatre and performance i.e. be able to communicate creative and theoretical work to a range of audiences using different modes of delivery; be able to access, select and interpret theatre and performance research; present a structured and coherent argument (in both written and spoken form); be able to critique and evaluate live performance; effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
understand the cultural, historical and social contexts of a broad range of performance practices and practitioners;
understand a range of key components of performance (e.g. text, movement, aural/visual elements, performers, audience, space etc.)
evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving in theatre and performance practice, theory and research; understand processes by which performance is created, realised and managed; contribute to the group processes involved in the creation of original work;
appreciate and employ the main methods of enquiry in the field of theatre and performance and critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of enquiry; develop a research proposal taking into account methodologies appropriate to the discipline of theatre and performance;
appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners; reflect on their progress and make appropriate adjustments to their working practices;
apply academic research skills with growing competence;
adjust to professional and disciplinary boundaries and demonstrate increased awareness of ethical considerations relating to theatre and performance.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
qualities and transferable skills necessary and related to working in the field of theatre and performance - the ability to write in concise and accurate English; to work collaboratively as part of a team; to respond imaginatively and flexibly to a creative brief; to access and utilise appropriate information; to problem solve; to communicate effectively in a variety of forms and to various audiences; to work independently and in groups; to collaborate effectively in pursuing goals with others;
skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility – organisational skills; self-motivation; working to a deadline; punctuality and attendance; awareness of health and safety procedures; awareness of ethics.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

demonstrating the knowledge and application of a broad range of concepts, information and techniques relevant to theatre and performance through group presentation, individual essay, practical performance and reflective log;
work that is developed on negotiation and liaison with academic staff, peers and external organisations;
demonstrating basic professional abilities, skills and competencies in the discipline of theatre and performance.
