Learning outcomes

On completion of the year abroad students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- Engage in everyday conversation, write basic sentences and read simple texts in Portuguese;
- Acquire academic and practical knowledge of contemporary Portuguese-speaking countries;
- Develop personal independence, self-confidence, and the social and interpersonal skills.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- Oral, written and practical skills in Portuguese;
- The organisation of life and study in a Portuguese-speaking country;
- Inter-personal skills required to operate in Portuguese-speaking society;
- The ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- Skills necessary for the communication of information;
- Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed (on a Pass/Fail basis) by:

- Submission of a year-abroad logbook;
- Satisfactory feedback as to student performance from the foreign educational institution or employer;
- Successful completion of any academic work set for the student while overseas.
