BA Russian B and Spanish

Year 3

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of:

- being able to achieve effective communication in Russian with native or other competent speakers;
- being able to effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
- having consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of complex structures of Russian;
- being able to demonstrate complex receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;
- being able to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of one or more aspects of the literatures, cultures, linguistic contexts, history, politics, geography, social and economic structures of the societies of Russia and the Former Soviet Union;
- demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Russian culture and society, that will have been significantly enhanced by the compulsory period of residence in Moscow.

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- achieve effective communication in both Spanish and the other language studied with native or other competent speakers
- demonstrate complex receptive and productive language skills in both Spanish and the other language studied and in a variety of contexts
- have consolidated and extended knowledge and understanding of complex structures of the Spanish language and the other language studied
- to demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of aspects of the literatures, cultures, history, social and economic structures of both Spanish-speaking countries and those of the other language studied
- effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- qualities and transferable skills related to Russian and Slavonic Studies, valuable for employment, eg. be able to gather and analyse information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources, be able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning;
- word-processing in Cyrillic;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- decision making.

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills valuable for employment related to the subject area(s) studied, such as being able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources, being able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and independent learning, including the ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners
- decision making;

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of a broad range of concepts, information and techniques relevant to the area of study;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion.
Assessment methods include, where appropriate for each module:
- written examinations
- oral language examinations
- assessed language coursework (including the written project prepared during the preceding year abroad and the oral presentation in Russian on this project: this constitutes 20% of the mark for SLAV 2001)
- assessed non-language coursework.

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion;
