Year 2

Learning outcomes

During the period of residence abroad, students will have the opportunity to:

- Make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of Russian language;
- Face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in Russia;
- Acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- Develop the intercultural/social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a
different community;
- Seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within
the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future
employment.

On completion of the year abroad students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- Communicate confidently with native or other competent speakers of Russian across the sometimes unpredictable and
complex range of aspects of everyday life, work and/or study in a foreign culture;
- Gain first-hand knowledge and appreciation of the target culture with enhanced cultural self-awareness.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- Oral, written and practical skills in Russian;
- The organisation of life and study in Russia;
- Inter-personal skills required to operate in Russian-speaking society;
- The ability to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- Skills necessary for the communication of information;
- Skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility and decision-making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed (on a Pass/Fail basis) by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes specified for the residence abroad and will include:

- Submission of a written outline plan of their Residence Abroad Project in January;
- Attend a minimum of 70% of classes run by IRLC. Satisfy the examiners in Moscow, passing all the examinations and tests set by IRLC with a grade of 65% or above in the final test;
- Students must receive a satisfactory report from IRLC on conduct and work.
