Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students will be able to:

LO1: conduct theory and data based basic investigations into economic problems in at least one country
LO2: identify, collect, appraise and apply country-level data and information to resolve economic problems
LO3: engage critically with current theoretical and empirical literature in a at least one field of economics to analyse issues in either a local or the global economy and their relevance for policy design or the management of commercial, public or not-for-profit organisations
LO4: demonstrate the analytical, critical thinking and intellectual skills required to solve national or international economic problems
LO5: define, design, execute and present a significant and extended piece of independent research on an economic topic
LO6: demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and the ability to function sensitively and productively when working in cross-cultural teams
LO7: critically evaluate the potential of economic activities to deliver positive and negative social and environmental outcomes
LO8: produce professional-quality economic reports and documents
LO9: deliver professional-quality presentations on economic issues using appropriate visual aids and technical support

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- personal development planning skills, including self-auditing and self-reflection, decision-making and action planning;
- basic research skills in the analysis of economic problems;
- improved essay writing skills, including essay structure, citation, bibliography and presentation of equations and empirical evidence; and
- basic IT and quantitative skills appropriate to the study of economics.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline; and
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
