Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students will:

LO1: have advanced their capability to conduct more sophisticated theory and data based investigations into economic problems in at least one country
LO2: have advanced their capability to identify, collect, appraise and apply country-level data and information to resolve economic problems
LO3: have advanced their capability to engage critically with current theoretical and empirical literature in a at least one field of economics to analyse issues in either a local or the global economy and their relevance for policy design or the management of commercial, public or not-for-profit organisations
LO4: have advanced their capability to demonstrate the analytical, critical thinking and intellectual skills required to solve national or international economic problems
LO5: have advanced their capability to define, design, execute and present a significant and extended piece of independent research on an economic topic
LO6: demonstrate more effective interpersonal skills and will have advanced the ability to function sensitively and productively when working in cross-cultural teams
LO7: have advanced their capability to critically evaluate the potential of economic activities to deliver positive and negative social and environmental outcomes
LO8: have advanced their capability to produce professional-quality economic reports and documents
LO9: have advanced their capability to deliver professional-quality presentations on economic issues using appropriate visual aids and technical support

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- decision making skills; and
- more advanced quantitative, research and essay writing skills.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline/profession to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline; and
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion.
