Year 1

Learning outcomes

-Basic concepts, principles and practical techniques associated with study of the core disciplines of mathematics and chemistry and either physics or biology;
-The ways in which concepts and theory are generated, applied and critically examined in the sciences;
-How scientific and mathematical principles and concepts can be used to describe and explain phenomena;
-Key ethical issues associated with scientific disciplines;
-Examples of the global and cultural dimensions of the core sciences;
-How to use basic generic and subject-specific intellectual qualities to
-Communicate the results of their work,
-Present a structured and coherent simple argument,
-Interpret and evaluate some basic concepts and principles within the core scientific disciplines,
-Their strengths and weaknesses as learners.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

-ability to analyse and critically evaluate information / experimental results and to draw valid conclusions;
-scientific and mathematical skills required for basic enquiry along with the ability to communicate information, understanding, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
-ability to make effective and critical use of electronic resources for their learning;
-ability to plan for their own personal and professional development .

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

-opportunity to demonstrate understanding of relevant concepts and theoretical perspectives in the disciplines covered on the course;
-opportunity to demonstrate basic practical techniques associated with experimental science;
-use of a range of formats for assessed work that develop skills of effective communication for an academic setting;
-encouragement to explore new ideas and to test and evaluate received opinion.
