Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should be able to:

- Quantify the effects of human activities on the atmosphere.
- Demonstrate and apply in-depth knowledge of particular atmospheric processes and issues.
- Appreciate and evaluate the interaction between the Earth's atmosphere and other parts of the Earth system.
- Use computer programmes and models as a tool for simulating atmospheric processes and to write computer programmes to analyse data.
- Apply knowledge to understand new or unfamiliar behaviour of the atmosphere.

Transferable (key) skills

On completion of this programme/year students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme, broad competencies in the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied:

- Understand and be able to use with confidence a number of tools of professional atmospheric scientists, such as weather charts, satellite observations, etc
- Field skills, be able to organise and execute a field experiment of moderate complexity and report on new observations and their significance
- Numeracy, be able to analyse new or unfamiliar complex datasets and draw hypotheses from their analysis.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of each module:

- demonstrating basic competency consistent with requirements of the profession
- applying a broad range of skills (numerical, computational, statistical) to well structured or directed problems in a complex situation
- demonstrating work that is both descriptive and analytical in nature
- demonstrating ability to keep accurate and informative log of activities and results
- demonstrating ability to present results in written, graphical and numerical formats, including computer programme output.
