MA East Asian Cultures and Societies (Language Pathway)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of methodologies relevant to the study of the East Asian region and its constituent countries (China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia);
- appraise critically historical, social, economic and political developments in the East Asian region and its constituent countries from a multi-disciplinary perspective;
- exhibit competence in an East Asian language, and general and specific abilities in dealing with cross-cultural situations;
- gain a solid grounding in research methodology, approaches and issues in the East Asian context and be able to apply this to their own research;
- take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
- proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
- critically and creatively evaluate current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the study of the East Asian region.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma & Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in or with the Asia Pacific region;
- the ability to evaluate their own achievement and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and cross-cultural situations;
- independent learning and the ability to organize and manage individual and co-operative work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
-the ability to critically engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:
- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry in the field of East Asian Studies;
- demonstrating breadth and depth of knowledge of the region;
- drawing on a range of perspectives and academic disciplines relevant to study of the region;
- evaluating and criticizing received opinion;
- making reasoned judgments whilst understanding the limitations on judgments made in the absence of complete data.
