MSc Diagnostic Imaging

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have shown, in independent, research-based enquiry in imaging practice, evidence of being able:

- demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and mastery of equipment/techniques relevant to diagnostic imaging practice;
- demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of underpinning scientific, technical and professional principles and concepts informed by knowledge at the forefront of practice in diagnostic imaging;
- critically appraise the need for imaging/ image-guided investigations and procedures by synthesising clinical and other relevant information;
- applying in-depth specialist scientific, technical and professional knowledge and sophisticated psycho-motor skills to the acquisition, interpretation and reporting of examinations to standards that meet national and local quality criteria;
- critically appraise and respond to each individual’s physical and psycho-social needs whilst undertaking imaging examinations to standards that meet service and user / carer expectations;
- critically evaluate imaging examinations for technical and diagnostic quality;
- take a proactive role in imaging practice and critically reflect on the development of their professional relationships with other members of multidisciplinary teams;
- critically and creatively evaluate current issues and research related to imaging practice and its role in the diagnosis of disease;
- demonstrate specialist in-depth knowledge and a sophisticated understanding of techniques applicable to their own research and advanced scholarship within the context of diagnostic imaging;
- proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
- exhibit mastery in the exercise of personal and professional intellectual abilities.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught) students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;
- critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- make reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
