Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have shown, either breadth or depth in a focussed area of imaging practice, evidence of being able:

- demonstrate in-depth, extended, specialist knowledge of equipment and techniques relevant to advanced practice in diagnostic imaging;
- demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of underpinning scientific, technical and professional principles/concepts informed by knowledge at the forefront of advanced practice in diagnostic imaging;
- critically appraise the need for imaging and image-guided investigations and procedures by synthesising clinical and other relevant information;
- applying in-depth specialist scientific, technical and professional knowledge and sophisticated psycho-motor skills to the acquisition, interpretation and reporting of diagnostic ultrasound examinations to standards that meet national and local quality criteria;
- critically appraise and respond to each individual's physical and psycho-social needs whilst undertaking diagnostic ultrasound investigations to standards that meet service and user / carer expectations;
- critically evaluate diagnostic ultrasound examinations for technical and diagnostic quality;
- take a proactive role in imaging practice and critically reflect on the development of their professional relationships with other members of a multidisciplinary team;
- critically evaluate current issues and research related to diagnostic imaging practice and its role in the diagnosis and management of disease;
- demonstrate a specialist in-depth understanding of techniques applicable to their own enquiry and scholarship within the context of diagnostic imaging.
- proactively formulate ideas and hypotheses and evaluate these.

Transferable (key) skills

Postgraduate Diploma students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures CPD;
- critically to engage in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

Achievement for the Postgraduate Diploma will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating received opinion.
