BA Chinese and East Asian Religions and Cultures

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the discipline;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities;
- to communicate the results of their work; present a structured and coherent simple argument;
- to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the discipline;
- to evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate an awareness of professional and disciplinary boundaries;
- demonstrate an understanding of the historical development and basic teachings of the major religions and philosophical traditions of East Asia;
- show an understanding of the problems and shortcomings in Western studies of East Asian religions;
- demonstrate knowledge of Western constructions of East Asian religions;
- demonstrate knowledge of historical development, major doctrines and social practices of Buddhism, Islam, Shinto, Christianity, Confucianism and Daoism in East Asia;
- show an understanding of the problems and shortcomings in Western studies of East Asian religions;
- demonstrate knowledge of Western constructions of East Asian religions;
- communicate in Chinese at a survival level;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of the target language ;
- demonstrate simple receptive and productive language skills in a variety of contexts;
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of one or more aspects of the literatures, cultures, linguistic contexts, history, politics, geography and social structures of Chinese speaking societies;

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- skills to analyze critically a range of visual and literary materials relevant in thy study of East and Southeast Asian religions and philosophies
- qualities and transferable skills related to the subject area(s) studied valuable for employment, such as to be able to gather and process information from a variety of paper, audio-visual and electronic sources in both English and Chinese, be able to use IT effectively both as a means of communication and as an aid to learning;
- the transferable/key/generic skills necessary for employment related to the area(s) studied, especially in relation to team working and independent working skills using both English and Chinese;
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility, and social and cultural sensitivity;

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies;
- assessed presentations
