BA English Literature and Theatre Studies

Year 2

Learning outcomes

On completion of Level 2, students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of English studies and Theatre Studies;

- use generic and subject-specific qualities, ie,
> present a structured and coherent argument
> have sound knowledge of critical terminology
> have sound knowledge of linguistic terminology;

- have experience of English literature from a range of literary periods and locations, especially those prior to 1800;
- have a critical understanding of the importance of the literary, cultural and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written and read, especially those prior to 1800;
- develop and deploy judiciously collaborative skills in the context of theatre practice;
- have a sound understanding of the ways in which historical theatre texts may be adapted to speak to contemporary audiences;
- have an understanding of a range of social and political applications for theatre practice;
- have a knowledge of contemporary theatre practices which are not centred on the literary text;
- have an awareness of the importance of the literary, theatrical, cultural and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written and read and theatre is practiced;
- develop and deploy judiciously a range of critical skills;
- develop and deploy judiciously a range of analytical skills;
- develop and deploy judiciously collaborative skills in the context of theatre practice;
- demonstrate a critical knowledge of up to two particular and specific literary and language fields, facilitated through the choice and pursuit of research-led option modules.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of concepts, information and techniques relevant to the disciplines;
- demonstrating the ability to construct an argument;
- demonstrating the ability to carry out and present research;
- demonstrating knowledge of English Literature, dramatic texts, 'performance texts' and theatre theory;
- demonstrating the ability to work within a group towards performance-based presentations;
- demonstrating the ability to be critical of scholarly work.
