BA English Language and Literature

Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of Level 1, in English Language, students should have provided evidence of:
- awareness of the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of English Language studies;
- the ability to do straightforward linguistic analysis of written and spoken Standard English;
- a broad grasp of the outline history of English;
- an awareness of methods of data collection suitable for English Language study
- an ability to appreciate and interpret the underlying concepts and principles of English Language studies;
- an ability to evaluate quantitative and/or qualitative data;
- basic knowledge of linguistic terminology;
- basic skill in broad phonetic transcription of their own English and of other common varieties of British English;
- have a basic knowledge of the structure and levels of English, and how to apply concepts relating to the structure and history of English to the analysis of texts;
- demonstrate a critical knowledge of the social, political cultural contexts of the English language as a medium for literature; and of how to discuss the style of a literary work in terms of grammar, lexis, and sound;
- the ability to use generic and subject-specific qualities, i.e.:
- be able to present a structured and coherent argument
- be able to write in an academic style suitable for the discipline
- be able to communicate the results of their work;
- develop critical skills;
- develop analytical skills.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to construct an argument;
- demonstrating some knowledge of English Language and Literature.
