BA English Language and Literature

Year 2

Learning outcomes

On completion of year 2, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate a familiarity with the main concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of English studies;
- ability to analyse a text of written or spoken English (literary or non-literary) in a range of varieties and from different periods, using appropriate technical terms and/or critical vocabulary;
- broad understanding of the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of English Language studies;
- ability to analyse a text of written or spoken English in a range of varieties and from different periods, using appropriate technical terms, and both quantitative and qualitative methods;
- knowledge of regional and textual variation in contemporary English;
- using a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the collection and analysis of data and information;
- knowledge of regional and textual variation in contemporary English;
- have a sound knowledge of the structure of English, and how to apply concepts of the structure of English to the analysis of texts;
- demonstrate a sound critical knowledge of the social, political cultural contexts of the English language as a medium for literary and non-literary texts; and of how to discuss the style of a text in terms of grammar, lexis, and sound;
- demonstrate a command of English syntax, grammar and style, through the study of the English language and via engagement with literary materials;
- demonstrate a critical knowledge of up to two particular and specific literary and language fields, facilitated through the choice and pursuit of research-led option modules.

- develop and deploy judiciously a range of critical skills;

- using a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the collection and analysis of data and information;
- be able to communicate effectively information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility;
- decision making.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to construct an argument;
- demonstrating knowledge of English Language and Literature;
- demonstrating the ability to be critical of scholarly work.
