Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should be able to:

- demonstrate in depth knowledge of particular business-environment issues;
- understand and analyse the complexity of drivers at the interface between business and the environment, and the interrelationships between these drivers;
- evaluate the roles of different institutions in business-environmental management;
- engage with key theoretical perspectives for the analysis of aspects of business environmental sustainability, and with tools for improved practice;
- appreciate real environment-business practice, drawing on a specific workplace assignment;
- appreciate key analytical methods and tools for environmental management and related research, and critically evaluate the appropriateness of different methods and tools;
- employ a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information.

Transferable (key) skills

On completion of this programme/year students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme, broad competencies in the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to the subject area(s) studied:

- intellectual skills ( for example, applying generic and subject specific intellectual qualities to standard situations outside the context in which they were originally studied, and evaluating and criticising received opinion)
- practical skills (for example, demonstrating practical competencies in complex, multi-issue decision making and in the field);
- communication skills (for example, effectively communicating information, arguments and analysis in a variety of forms;
- numeracy and C&IT skills (for example, using a range of techniques to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information);
- interpersonal/team working (for example, in brainstorming approaches to problem solving);
- self management and professional development (for example, exercising personal responsibility in choice of topic and case study application of generic principles).

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of each module:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of business-environment competencies to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline.
