Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

- demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of the discipline;
- use basic generic and subject specific intellectual qualities ie
> be able to communicate the results of their work
> present a structured and coherent simple argument
> be able to interpret and evaluate the underlying concepts and principles of the discipline
> evaluate qualitative and/or quantitative data;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline;
- appreciate their strengths and weaknesses as learners;
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main features of key industrial and labour institutions in market economies;
- use word-processing, spreadsheet and database programs and network resources;
- understand and analyse contemporary and historical developments in the organisation of business;
- demonstrate an awareness of the ways in which research is conducted in human resource management;
- understand and critically analyse competing theoretical perspectives on organisational behaviour; and
- apply the main economic principles and models to explore business and management problems and problems of market economies.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- personal development planning skills, including self-auditing and self-reflection, decision-making and action planning;
- skills necessary for the exercising of personal responsibility; and
- skills in conducting research in the field of human resource management, covering the following research techniques: surveying, interviews, ethnographic research, case study research and focus groups.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline; and
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
