BA Linguistics and Phonetics

Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes refer to the aims listed in the section Programme specification.

On completion of the year students should have:

- an understanding of core linguistic terms and concepts (Aim 1)
- the ability to outline common approaches to the study of language (Aim 2)
- an understanding of core terms and concepts relating to theory formation and theory testing (Aim 3)
- the ability to carry out a basic linguistic analysis of given written and/or spoken data, with appropriate guidance (Aim 4)
- an awareness of formal, qualitative and quantitative methods of linguistic analysis (Aim 4)
- a familiarity with a range of analytic techniques, including phonetic transcription and structural annotation (Aim 4)
- an understanding of the aims and scope of major subdisciplines of linguistics, and a familiarity with research in these areas (Aim 5)
- the ability to use electronic and library-based resources to investigate familiar and unfamiliar language data (Aim 6)
- an awareness of ethical and methodological issues involved in collecting and analysing linguistic data (Aim 6)
- the ability to read for academic purposes and summarize complex ideas in relation to the study of language, with close guidance (Aim 7)
- the ability to present a short coherent argument in an appropriate written or oral style, based on some amount of independent research, with close guidance (Aim 7)
- a familiarity with general and discipline-specific conventions of acknowledging and referencing source material (Aim 7)

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the transferable skills necessary to non-vocational employment, or to further academic study and/or professional qualifications
- information technology skills related to the access and use of electronic resources;
- an awareness of the role of personal responsibility to personal and academic development;
- the ability to make limited decisions within a highly constrained environment;
- the communication of limited and simple information to a highly-constrained set of audiences;
- an emerging ability to read and think critically.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- drawing on a restricted view of various areas of the discipline at a descriptive level;
- practicing emerging abilities, skills and competencies within a supportive environment.
