BSc Economics and Finance

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- understand and apply knowledge of selected topics in advanced micro and macro economics to the analysis of a variety of contemporary policy issues
- understand and apply knowledge of topics in advanced finance to questions of current business practice
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in chosen advanced specialist areas in economics and finance
- research, analyse and present a large project on a chosen issue in economics, deploying appropriate techniques of analysis and enquiry within the discipline to demonstrate a conceptual understanding, the ability to develop and sustain an argument and to appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the discipline

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
the key transferable skills necessary for employment related to economics and finance
- the application of critical thinking and problem solving to a variety of applied problems in economics and finance
- the communication of information, ideas, problems and solutions in a variety of ways to a variety of audiences
- the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility in planning a substantive piece of independent research
- the skills necessary to support future independent learning.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
- knowledge and application of economic and finance theory and their applications through written examination
- research skills, the collections and interpretation of data and the written communication of research findings through the writing of a research dissertation
- presentational skills through assessed individual presentation of independent research proposals
