Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

Core Skills

- Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the physical and biotic evolution of the Earth and the links between the two.
- Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the structure of the Earth including surface and interior processes.
- Be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the make-up and formation of common rocks and minerals and the morphology of common fossil groups.
- Be introduced and exposed to state-of-the-art research and research practices within the field of geological sciences.

Practical Skills

- Be able to identify and describe common rocks, minerals and fossils.
- Have the ability to observe, describe, collect and interpret a variety of geological data.
- Have a basic understanding of how to construct and interpret geological maps via laboratory and fieldwork experience.
- Have the ability to integrate laboratory skills and theoretical skills to understand geological problems whilst in the field.



Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- Have the ability to work independently and as part of a team with an understanding of personal responsibility.
- Demonstrate an ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline.
- Have the ability to interpret data and present findings via oral presentations, posters, technical reports and essays.
- Be introduced to a variety of specialist software packages including geoinformatic and data-processing software.
- Have the ability to locate, evaluate, utilise and correctly reference a variety of primary and secondary literature sources.
- Be introduced to the concept of employability via active engagement with Leeds for Life and through personal tutorials.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
- work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
- demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
