BSc Geological Sciences

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

Core

- Develop an advanced working knowledge of geological sciences including sedimentology, igneous and metamorphic petrology, geophysics, geochemistry, Earth resources, palaeontology, structural geology, and geological maps and mapping.
- Develop an awareness of the economic and ethical implications of the utilisation of geological resources.
- Engage with carrying out independent research and development of the knowledge of research practices within the field of geological sciences.

Practical skills

- Reinforce and further develop the ability to identify, describe, and interpret rocks, minerals and fossils beyond the most common Earth materials
- Have a deeper understanding and working knowledge of how to construct and interpret geological maps and cross-sections through increased exposure to field work.
- Reinforce and develop the ability to integrate laboratory skills and theoretical knowledge through advanced fieldwork problem solving.

Transferable (key) skills

- Have an enhanced ability to work independently and as part of a team with an understanding of personal responsibility
- Be able to demonstrate an enhanced ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline
- Be introduced to critical reflection to aid data interpretation and synthesis.
- Have enhanced development of data presentation via oral presentations, posters, technical reports and essays.
- Have a reinforced and expanded working knowledge of specialist software including geoinformatic, mathematical and statistical packages.
- Have enhanced development of employability via active engagement with Leeds for Life in academic and personal tutorials.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of aspects/competencies of the discipline/profession to complex, albeit standard, situations and simple, albeit novel or atypical, instances;
- work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material;
- demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to the discipline;
- the ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion.
