• The ability to engage critically with educational research and policy literature
• Research expertise and subject knowledge in preparation for advanced study for a higher research degree (MPhil, EdD or PhD)
• Applied leadership and strategic management expertise in preparation for promotion to more senior positions in their area of professional practice
• The ability to evaluate their own achievement and that of others
• Decision-making capabilities in complex, dynamic and unpredictable policy situations
• The ability to work independently in a way which facilitates lifelong learning and continuing professional development

Assessment

Achievement for the Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme and will involve the achievement of students in:
EDUC 5042M
A verbal presentation supported by either a poster or a PowerPoint presentation halfway through the module (50%) and an essay of 3,000 words at the end of the module (50%). The first assessment will provide an opportunity for each student to explore a global policy issue in terms of its relevance to his/her national context. It will serve to enhance presentational skills, build confidence and deepen understanding of the implications of global trends and issues in a national context. It will also facilitate the sharing of unique knowledge and insights of that context with fellow students. In terms of progression, it will be a foundation for writing the second, longer essay assignment.

EDUC 5043M
A single essay assignment of journal length (6000 words). This will provide each student with an opportunity for deeper critical reflection on an aspect of educational leadership of personal and professional interest. It will also mark a progression from the assessment procedure for the first module (EDUC 5042M) by enhancing the skills for writing a longer, more research intensive assignment in preparation for the demands of the dissertation module (EDUC 5040M).

The assessment of a further 60 credits of the taught modules will depend on the options chosen, but will provide the opportunity for varied and diverse forms of assessment.

The remaining 60 credits will be assessed on the basis of a 12,000 word dissertation based on either a critical review of literature relating to an educational policy, leadership or management issue or a small-scale empirical study, such as a case study.
