Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

Core

- Have the ability to contextualise, synthesize and critically evaluate information about geological materials and processes, at a variety of scales.
- Have an understanding the practical, economic, and ethical implications of the utilisation of geological resources at professional industry standard.
- Be able to carry out independent research in both the field and the laboratory with practices that meet professional standards within the field of geological sciences.

Practical skills
- Professional level working knowledge of Earth materials, enabling the ability to answer research questions and real world problems.
- A comprehensive and independent capacity to construct and interpret geological maps through extensive exposure to fieldwork and laboratory training.
- Professional level ability to integrate laboratory skills and theoretical knowledge for advanced fieldwork problem solving and investigation.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- Have an advanced ability to work independently and as part of a team with an understanding of personal responsibility
- Be fully able to demonstrate the ability to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to problem solving associated with the discipline
- Professional level report writing skills based on data collection, interpretation and thorough critical reflection.
- Professional level of data presentation via oral presentations, posters, technical reports and essays.
- Reinforced and expanded working knowledge of specialist software packages including geoinformatic and data-processing software.
- Enhanced development of employability through optional choices aimed at providing specialist skills and knowledge for different industry sectors, and through active engagement with Leeds for Life in personal tutorials.
- Be able to carry a substantial research project to completion, including integration into a research group containing academic and postdoctoral staff, and PhD students, and oral presentations to both the research group and peers.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Undergraduate Master's will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:

- evidencing an ability to conduct independent in-depth enquiry within the discipline;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;
- drawing on a range of perspectives on an area of study;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- making reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.
